Our Curriculum
We offer a broad and balanced curriculum individually tailored to the needs of the young person.
Curriculum at Mortimer House School
The school’s curriculum is broad and balanced and includes, where appropriate, all of the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum for KS3–KS4 as well as for post-16 pupils.
When a pupil is placed at the school, a learning support plan is derived from their EHCP, which allows each pupil to follow a curriculum tailored to the appropriate key stage, taking into account future career plans and preferences.
We encourage learners to work to the best of their ability. They are taught to their own personal academic level, which may vary from their chronological age.
Key Stage 4/Post-16
Our main specialism is Key Stage 4/Post-16.
At Key Stage 4, pupils have the opportunity to follow a more flexible curriculum, including work-related learning. Academic qualifications are offered via A-Level, AS-Level, GCSE, Functional Skills, BTEC, and Vocational Qualifications, including entry-level where appropriate.
Wherever possible, we aim to broaden the education offered through work experience and, if appropriate, vocational qualifications at local colleges.
Where appropriate, we begin the Key Stage 4 curriculum in Year 9.
Key Stage 3
We also deliver Key Stage 3.
Learning is differentiated according to ability in KS3 and takes into account the particular barriers and vulnerabilities of each learner. The balance between cross-curricular themes and subject-specific ones will depend on the engagement and interest of the learner, but assessment and tracking will in all cases relate back to National Curriculum progression.
Physical Activities
In addition to the above, Mortimer House School pupils have the opportunity to participate in external Outdoor Pursuits and PE. Due the school building environment we do not offer physical activities onsite but utilise a range of local facilities.
My personal best is higher than I ever thought as I was previously told negative things, but not here. I feel more confident in myself and have never been so proud of myself in my life.
